How is technology impacting your life? Sure there’s an abundance of conveniences from tech, but what happens when your own emotions and decision making is controlled by tech and social media? The Spiritual Spiral is here to inspire you to be more present, to turn off your phone and appreciate a more ”analog” lifestyle. Monday Aug 02, 2021
With all the confusion and chaos happening around the world, now felt like the perfect time to welcome yoga teacher and my friend, Sesa O' Connor, back to the show. I certainly find myself feeling deeper levels of anxiety thanks to the non-stop media dissection of the virus so Sesa and I start off by talking about the media and the impact they may have on our culture. We talk about social media, the virus, staying healthy and why it's so challenging to have a thoughtful conversation in this day and age especially if your perspective differs from the narrative being pushed by mainstream media. Sesa and I also discuss trauma, mental health and the perils of living through a pandemic. She also shares a personal story about being a mother and why taking time to meditate or practice yoga may be the best thing you can do for your health. You can find Sesa on IG @sesayoga and you can also take one of her classes online at @bodhilive or visit her in person at Yoga Salt in Wilmington, North Carolina. Bike Rides, Tmi & One Measly Like
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Do you ever wonder if you came close to dying today? I know, a potentially morose question to think about, but I do wonder if we sometimes come close death and we didn't even realize it. Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I felt compelled to tell a story about a recent bike ride that could have gone awry. I talk about our culture's desperate need to be right and to be first and I wonder if our culture is at a dangerous crossroads in large part from the non-stop inundation of information. If leaders and members of the media are more concerned with their own agendas instead of finding the truth, will we ever get past the chaos of the ongoing pandemic. I play a clip from the Joe Rogan podcast and talk about a recent Sam Harris podcast and wonder if their opinions aren't based on truth but simply on finding a story that aligns more with their "brand." I talk about a recent experience I had posting a new music video on Facebook that resulted in one measly 'LIKE" and I end the show by playing a brand new song. Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I am thrilled to welcome my good friend, Matt Dery, back to the show. While Matt currently works for Financial Architects Inc., Matt has worked in the sports and broadcasting industry for over twenty years and hosts weekly podcasts for the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Lions. Matt and I begin the show by talking about this year's NBA Finals and why it may be a tough sell for the casual fan. We talk about Chris Paul, Richard Sherman, and how our culture has become too quick to react without getting the full story. Matt and I talk about the uphill battle of equality in America and the difference between being a sportscaster and an entertainer. Matt and I also share personal stories about the omnipresence of anxiety we both feel as we try to navigate through this post-pandemic world. You can find Matt on Twitter @DerySpeaks and if you enjoy today's episode and you want to support the show, please subscribe on iTUNES. Care, Chaos and Control
Monday Jul 05, 2021
Monday Jul 05, 2021
How much of your life is under your control? Is life just a series of random and chaotic events? Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I felt compelled to talk a little bit about the randomness of life. I go on a bike ride each weekend and I'm always surprised at how often I see people in their cars texting and staring down at their phones. Do they even care that they sometimes come close to hitting me while they're driving? Politicians and leaders want you to believe they have your best interests in mind and everything is "under control" but I can't help but think life is sheer chaos. I also play a clip from the Marc Maron show where he talks about the torture that comes from being an artist. I spent the last four years writing a book and the last year producing my next record and while the process has had many moments of pure joy, the process of creation is also filled with pain and torture. And now that my record and book are done and close to being released, I think to myself, what does it take to get anyone to listen or care? Agoraphobia Parties

Friday Jun 25, 2021
Are you feeling apprehensive to re-enter the world? Would you rather stay in the safe confines of your home? Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I wanted to talk a little about the anxiety I've been experiencing lately and share a quick story about taking my first public yoga class in over a year. The world wants you to think everything is "back to normal" but do you feel that way? Are you feeling anxious when you step outside in the world? I also wanted to play a clip from the Marc Maron Podcast where Marc is talking to musician and film composer, Danny Elfman. Danny talks about some of the anger and frustration he felt during the pandemic yet I can't help but wonder where did the angst-ridden artists go? Are they too apprehensive to express themselves in the cancel culture landscape? If you enjoy today's episode and you want to support the show, please subscribe on iTUNES or share the show with your friends or head over to iTunes and write a quick review. Phillip Peterson

Sunday Jun 13, 2021
Sometimes the creative process can't be explained or understood but it should always be appreciated. So what happens to a culture when art isn't appreciated anymore? And what is the impact of Spotify and streaming services on the creative landscape? Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I am thrilled to welcome Seattle-based producer, film composer and multi-instrumentalist, Phillip Peterson to the show. I have been blessed to know Phil for over 15 years and he has played the strings on my last three records including my latest single, Animals. Phil and I have a wonderful conversation about the impact of Spotify and Phil explains why he prefers Youtube over other streaming sites. We talk about the creative process, the Seattle music scene and how social media is impacting artists everywhere. He also offers fantastic advice on ways that artists can bring new streams of revenue to their business. Phil is one of the most talented musicians and producers in the music business today and be sure to find Phil on Instagram @houseofbreakingglass. Are You Caught Up In The Numbers?
Monday Jun 07, 2021
Monday Jun 07, 2021
More followers. Subscribers. More likes. More, more, more! Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I felt inspired to briefly talk about the impact of numbers. Everywhere I turn, there seems to be a running tabulation of just about everything. The number of likes, subscribers and followers is everywhere but is that a good thing? What's the psychological impact of living in a world that is so caught up in numbers? I also wanted to briefly share a quick anecdote from last week where I had to travel thirty minutes away from my home. After my quick trip, I couldn't help but think about how the world may have an agoraphobia problem thanks to the pandemic. If you enjoy today's episode and you want to support the show, please subscribe on iTUNES or consider sharing the show with your friends or head over to iTunes and write a quick review. Dan Lutz

Wednesday May 26, 2021
Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I am thrilled to welcome bass player, producer and my friend, Dan Lutz to the show. It's amazing to think I met Dan almost 20 years ago when he played the upright bass on a song from my very first record. Since then, Dan has gone on to become one of the most well-known and sought after bass players in the music industry. His career spans all genres of music from jazz, rock, pop, fusion to even playing in Broadway musicals. Dan is a true musical powerhouse and I'm also excited to say he played the bass on four songs from my upcoming record. Today's episode is a wonderful and heartfelt talk about the power of music and the pivotal role it's played in Dan's life. Dan starts off by talking about how he first got into playing the bass guitar and the role his dad played in his musical introduction. I also begin the show by talking about how for the longest time, I never felt like I "heard" the bass guitar in a song and why that may have been the case. Dan talks about what he listens to when he's tracking bass guitar. We talk about the subtleties of production and the joy that comes from being in a studio with fellow musicians. Dan talks about his creative process and we discuss the impact tech, social media and the pandemic have had on the music business. Dan also shares some personal stories that taught him some valuable lessons when he was first starting out as a professional musician. You can find Dan on Instagram @triplelutz and if you enjoy today's episode and you want to support the show, please subscribe on iTUNES or consider sharing the show with your friends or head over to iTunes and write a quick review.
